Arshdeep Singh on Wednesday surpassed Yuzvendra Chahal in becoming India’s highest T20I wicket-taker.
He achieved this mark in Kolkata when India played England in the series opener. He began with 95 and required that one last wicket to tie with Yuzvendra, who had 96 and is unavailable for the series. He collected both those wickets in the T20I’s first three overs, dismissing Phil Salt and Ben Duckett, respectively.
He did so in just 61 T20Is since he made his debut for India against England in 2022.
Most wickets by Indians in T20Is
97-Arshdeep Singh (61 matches)
96-Yuzvendra Chahal (80 matches)
91-Hardik Pandya (110 matches)
90-Bhuvneshwar Kumar (87 matches)
89-Jasprit Bumrah (70 matches)
For India, pacer Mohammed Shami was really looking to come back into the side after the toss was won in England’s favour.
Shami was supposed to be making his grand return. Following much anticipation, the wait is growing long as India went with the fast-bowling trio of Hardik Pandya, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Arshdeep Singh, complementing their spin-bowling department with Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, and Varun Chakaravarthy.
For England in the game played at Kolkata, fifth-year Pacers Brydon Carse, Jamie Smith, Saqib Mahmood, and Rehan Ahmed will have to sit this out. “Looks like a good wicket, not a bad venue to have played ones,” he said. There will be some dew around.
