Former Indian batter Robin Uthappa praised Mohammed Shami’s outstanding performance against Sri Lanka in Mumbai on November 2. He said that Shami holds the same position as Virat Kohli in Team India.
Shami’s remarkable form in the 2023 World Cup continued as he took 5 wickets for just 18 runs against Sri Lanka. This marked his second five-wicket haul in the three matches he has participated in, bringing his total wicket count to an impressive 14 at an extraordinary average of 6.71.
While speaking to India Today after the game, Uthappa said, “He is not considered a legend yet because he is still playing, Uthappa said. “There is so much left to achieve for someone like Mohammed Shami. His personality is quite similar to Zaheer bhai and Srinath Sir, who have done service for India for decades.”
“So I think he is a similar kind of bowler, that same attitude, that same hunger, that same grit. He has the same caliber that we hold Virat Kohli to. What, while Virat Kohli is the batter to Team India, Mohammed Shami is the bowler to Team India.”
Mohammed Shami now also holds the top position in claiming the most wickets for India in the history of the ODI World Cup. Shami has an impressive 45 wickets in just 14 innings. He surpassed the previous record of 44 wickets held by Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath.
