The family court approved the divorce of cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and his wife on Thursday.
Chahal and his wife showed up at the family court in Bandra. Nitin Gupta, Chahal’s lawyer, said the court OK’d their request for a divorce. The court agreed they had met all the requirements. Gupta stated that the family court accepted the divorce request.
Chahal and Verma tied the knot in December 2020 and separated in June 2022, according to their petition.
They asked the family court for a divorce on February 5.
Because Chahal will be busy soon with the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Bombay High Court asked the family court to decide on the divorce by Thursday.
The IPL T20 tournament kicks off on March 22, and Chahal plays for the Punjab Kings.
The High Court also cut out the six-month waiting period that couples usually have after filing for divorce under the Hindu Marriage Act.
Chahal and Verma jointly requested the High Court to skip the waiting period since they both wanted the divorce.
Their lawyer, Nitin Gupta, also asked the court to speed up the divorce process.
The couple was against the family court’s decision on February 20 to not skip the waiting period.
According to the Hindu Marriage Act, couples usually have to wait six months before a divorce is finalized, giving them time to try to work things out.
The family court didn’t want to skip the waiting period because Chahal still needed to pay his wife Rs 4.75 crore, as part of their agreement.
He had only paid Rs 2.37 crore, the court noted. A marriage counselor’s report also said that they hadn’t fully complied with the mediation efforts.
But the high court said on Wednesday that they did comply with the terms, as the second payment was due only after the divorce was granted.
