On Tuesday, Trisha Gongadi, the Indian open batter, grabbed a piece of history in the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup as she became the first-ever player to crack the century mark in the tournament. The 19-year-old high-flyer touched the magic mark during India’s thrashing of Scotland by 150 runs in the Super Six stage of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup at Bayuemas Oval on Tuesday. Her century came when she scored 628 runs against Scotland. Trisha remained unbeaten on 110 off 59 balls, stroking 13 fours and 4 sixes at an impressive strike rate of 186.44. Trisha brought the Indian scoreboard to 3 in a 147-run stand for the opening wicket with G Kamalini, who got out after recording 51 runs off 42 balls. The opener again shared an indomitable 61-run partnership with Sanika Chalka (29 not out) that helped India reach 208 runs for 1 lost wicket in 20 overs.
This is the knock that has made Trisha the highest run-scorer of the tournament as she scored 230 runs in five matches. She was also part of India’s title-winning campaign in the inaugural Women’s U19 World Cup. In that tournament, she scored 116 runs in seven matches.
Davina Sarah T Perrin from England is in the second place: she scored 131 runs in four matches. If Trisha reaches that milestone of 68 runs in the next matches for the Niki Prasad-led India side, she will be poised to eclipse Shweta Sehrawat’s record of 297 runs set in 2023 during the first edition of the tournament. In that tournament, she played seven matches and made that many runs.
Trisha recovered from the humble 4 runs in the first match against West Indies on January 19, with an unbeaten 27 runs in the second Group A match against Malaysia. The Indian side eased to a 32-run target that day. Trisha followed that up with 49 runs in the third match against Sri Lanka, while she further improved her batting average to 40 runs in the first Super-six match to ensure that India defeated Bangladesh by 8 wickets.
The defending champions are in the semi-finals, having gone unbeaten so far.
