“You can’t complain if someone…”: Rahul Dravid On Controversial Mathews’ ‘Timed-Out’ Dismissal

Rahul Dravid, India’s head coach, waded into the ongoing debate about the spirit of cricket following the contentious dismissal of Angelo Mathews in the recent World Cup match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Mathews’ unprecedented ‘timed out’ decision stirred a heated discussion on the balance between adhering to game rules and embodying the spirit of cricket.

Angelo Mathews found himself at the heart of cricket history as the first international cricketer to face a ‘timed out’ dismissal. His arrival at the crease was timely, yet a broken helmet strap led to the delay. Consequently, Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan initiated an appeal, resulting in Mathews’ untimely departure.

The cricketing community stands divided in the aftermath of Mathews’ controversial dismissal. While some contend that Shakib merely enforced the rule, others emphasize the importance of the broader spirit of the game over strict regulations.

Pressed for his thoughts on this contentious issue, Rahul Dravid opted not to side with either argument. Addressing the media before India’s final World Cup league game, Dravid indirectly suggested that Shakib’s adherence to the rules was justified.

“In diverse situations, perspectives vary. There’s no absolute right or wrong. Whether to strictly enforce the rules or exhibit some flexibility will always lead to debates. You can’t complain if someone sees the rule. Yes, we may not do it. But if someone does it, you can’t complain,” said Rahul Dravid.

Shifting focus to India’s impending match against the Netherlands, Dravid extended warm praise for the Dutch team’s remarkable journey in the World Cup. He also acknowledged the ICC’s diligent efforts in uplifting associate nations’ standards.

“Kudos to the Netherlands for their commendable performance. Their qualifying journey speaks volumes about the associate teams’ uphill climb to this stage. The ICC’s efforts in boosting the standards of these nations deserve recognition. The Netherlands’ achievements will certainly elevate the morale of other teams. Their outstanding performance is a delight to witness, and we eagerly look forward to the match,” concluded Rahul Dravid.
