Former cricketer Yograj Singh, who is also the father of the famous all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, shared how the Australian team, led by Steve Waugh, toughened up his son. Yograj said that while Waugh’s comments might have sounded rough, they taught Yuvraj to stand his ground and respond to the opposition. When Yuvraj started his career at just 19, he wasn’t as expressive as he became later on, and that moment played a big role in his growth.
Yograj recalled an incident during the T20 World Cup in 2007 when Yuvraj and England’s Andrew Flintoff got into a heated argument. Yuvraj channeled that anger into his game, hitting young Stuart Broad for six sixes in an over. He described cricket as a tough game played by gentlemen, where emotions can rise on the field but should be left behind after the match.
He pointed out that players are friends off the field despite what happens during the game. Emotions run high, but forgiving each other is key. Yograj spoke up about the BCCI penalizing Lucknow Super Kings spinner Digvesh Rathi for his signature celebration, saying that such minor things shouldn’t warrant fines for young players. It’s all part of the sport, and we shouldn’t sweat the small stuff.
