When India hosts Sri Lanka for a three-match ODI series beginning January 10 in Guwahati, Rohit Sharma makes his comeback to international cricket. The Indian captain was forced to miss the two-match Test series that came after the ODI matches due to a minor thumb injury he sustained during India’s second ODI against Bangladesh last month.

Rohit Sharma told, “Firstly, it is not possible to play back-to-back matches. You need to give them (all format players) enough breaks. I fall into that as well. We have three T20Is against New Zealand. We will see what happens after IPL. I have not decided to give up the format.”

The Indian side won the T20I series against Sri Lanka by a score of 2-1, and will now play three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) against Sri Lanka to begin preparing for the 2023 One-Day World Cup. The ODI team also includes Virat Kohli and KL Rahul in addition to Rohit. Ishan Kishan will not start in place of Shubman Gill in the first ODI, Rohit said when questioned about his opening partner.

In 2022, Gill had a successful ODI season without Rohit, but Ishan is now vying for the opening berth. Ishan scored 210 runs against Bangladesh in India’s final one-day international in December, but the Indian captain ended the debate over who would bat with him on Tuesday by saying, “unfortunate that we won’t be able to play Ishan Kishan. We have to give Gill (Shubman Gill) a fair run.”
