Will Pucovski, once the future of Australian cricket, was reportedly forced to retire from the sport aged just 26 due to head injuries and multiple concussions. Pucovski, an opening batsman who made an impressive start to first-class cricket, opted for this difficult decision after medical experts recommended otherwise. In spite of being regarded as a player with a bright future, he only featured in one Test match for Australia, against India played in Sydney in 2021.
During that match, Pucovski batted valiantly with his dishevelled mane protruding from beneath his helmet before scoring 62 runs; however he found it difficult to cope with India’s spin attack especially off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and was eventually dismissed by Navdeep Saini. Despite having shown promise early on in his career, injuries and concussions were recurrent nemeses for Pucovski. His initial selection came on the back of a two-Test series against Sri Lanka scheduled for January 2019 but missed out after Kurtis Patterson was picked ahead of him.
Pucovski’s career has seen him play for Victoria in 36 first-class matches, scoring 2350 runs at a mean average of 45.19 and including seven centuries. He made his first-class debut in 2017, early beginning to show his potential with some strong performances with two double hundreds for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield which got him a call to play for the national team. Nevertheless, Pucovski has never played T20 cricket even though he was approached by Melbourne Stars during BBL160. His concentration remained on more extended formats of games where he exhibited the best technical proficiency and patience.
However, recurrent rounds of concussions became persistent fights for Pucovski leading to notable psychological health disturbances and long-term breaks from competition. This was clear that despite his injuries continuing would be too overwhelming.Pucovski’s journey started well because at Under-19 levels he represented Victorians with four centuries at the national tournaments. He made his List A debut in January 2017 by playing a tour game against Pakistan paving the way for Sheffield Shield .
