Shubman Gill was anticipated to make his return to competitive cricket today after a neck injury had sidelined him since the first Test against South Africa. He was also a part of the Punjab team for the Vijay Hazare Trophy game against Sikkim in Jaipur. But to everyone’s surprise, the Indian Captain for Test and ODI was not included in the playing XI.
The reason for the non-inclusion of Gill in today’s Vijay Hazare Trophy match is still uncertain, but he is likely to be present at the selection meeting for the next ODI series against New Zealand. For those who do not know, India’s squad is almost certain to be declared today or tomorrow and also it is reported that the selectors will meet online for this reason and Gill might attend the meeting.
Curiously enough, even about 90 minutes prior to the match, the Punjab Cricket Association made use of Shubman Gill’s poster to announce the match on X.
Gill has been handed a massive blow recently, with the selection committee preferring Sanju Samson and thereby dropping him from the Indian T20 World Cup squad. Gill has not been getting runs lately and his performance has really gone down. His recent week-long stay in Mohali was dedicated to rehabilitation from injury. Now he is in best condition and set to come back to the competitive scene with Punjab. The injury occurred while he was batting in the nets in Lucknow during the T20I series against South Africa.
