The mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy discloses that ever since his successful return to the Indian team, he has changed the way he bowls by putting over-spin on the ball as opposed to side-spin and it has worked wonders for him. Chakravarthy made his Indian debut during the T20I World Cup in 2021 but his chances were cut short after that unfortunate performance. She was effective in taking three wickets in the first match of the series against Bangaldesh. As great Nathan Lyon has proven over these years, using overspin on the certain pieces leads to sharp bounce and turn, which helped Fabrics on Sunday night.
The seriousness with which Varun describes NHS bowing to Jaker Ali, is enough to convince one of the former architect’s father’s total control of the craft.
“I used to be a side spin bowler, but right now, I have totally transformed and I am an over-spin bowler,” he said after contributing to India’s seven-wicket win.
“It’s a minute technical aspect of spin bowling but I took more than two years to achieve it. I experimented it in TNPL and IPL, slowly. There also had to be the psychological preparation but the biggest portion of the work was concentrated on the technique.” While Varun has been performing well in both the IPL and domestic cricket for two years now, the Indian team still did not acquire him and it only made him more relentless. It feels like he has been born again now that he has returned to wearing the blues.
“Whenever there was a team that was announced, I used to feel, ‘why is my name not there?’ and I used to think about that. That, so to speak created the drive in me that this must not be left.
“Now that all this is over, I must go to the fullest, as I have to make a comeback, which is why I want to play more domestic and focus on it. That kind of helped me,” said the mild-mannered cricketer in a self-effacing manner.
During Varun’s first over, which went for 15 runs, a catch was missed with Bangladesh captain Najmul Hasan Shanto and Towhid Hridoy attacking the spinner during the powerplay.
But, Suryakumar Yadav, the captain, again backed Varun for the next and he managed to dismiss Hridoy with a long-on catch.
“Yes, in the first over a catch could have come to me but that is T20 for you. That reverse-sweep six was in my opinion a good ball but still went for a six, so its all emotions together.” Varun faced Ravi Bishnoi in the first match of the series, the leggie who has also performed quite well in the few chances that he has after the T20 World Cup. This humility was in recognition of the healthy rivalry within the squad, and Varun too knew all about it.
“There is good competition and there is good camaraderie also. And the person who was cheering me was Ravi Bishnoi; he was coming and telling me messages, so I can’t ask for more”
“Such competition is actually good. People will keep pushing each other. There would be someone who would be better than the others at one particular point of time, and he will definitely get the Cup for India. So, the competition is much needed,” Varun added
