In just his fourth game playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Priyansh Arya, a batter for the Punjab Kings (PBKS), knocked out an impressive century against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Tuesday. The young player really made a name for himself, scoring a blistering 103 runs off just 42 balls. Even before this monumental performance, Priyansh had already showcased his talent in his IPL debut, where he scored 47 runs. However, it was his game against CSK that really caught everyone’s attention.
Against the five-time champions, Priyansh was in fantastic form, hitting a staggering nine sixes and seven fours. One highlight of his innings came in the 13th over when he went after Matheesha Pathirana, smashing 22 runs and completing his century in the process. When he finally got out, it was to Noor Ahmad, but he earned an enthusiastic standing ovation from his teammates and co-owner as he made his way back to the dugout.
What makes Priyansh’s feat even more impressive is that his century is the second-fastest by an Indian in IPL history, right behind Yusuf Pathan, who scored a 37-ball century for the Rajasthan Royals back in 2010.
So, who exactly is Priyansh Arya? He hails from Delhi and made a splash as an explosive opener. During the mega auction, Punjab Kings picked him up for a hefty sum of Rs 3.8 crore. This followed a stellar performance in the inaugural Delhi Premier League (DPL), where he became the top run-scorer, racking up 608 runs in just ten innings while playing for the South Delhi Superstarz. Earlier this year in DPL, he made headlines when he hit six sixes in a single over!
In the 2023-24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he continued to shine as he was the leading run-scorer for Delhi, gathering a total of 222 runs over seven innings with an average of 31.71 and a striking strike rate of 166.91. Interestingly, despite his incredible performance, he went unsold during the IPL 2024 auction.
Reflecting on that experience, Priyansh shared how he felt at the time. I was disappointed when I didn’t get picked. I had high hopes before the auction, but I tried not to dwell on it too much. I focused on the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 matches instead. When Punjab Kings finally chose me, I was over the moon! But I didn’t want to lose my focus on the other tournaments, so I couldn’t celebrate as much as I wanted to. Don’t worry, though; I’ll make sure to celebrate properly soon. His journey in cricket is certainly one to watch as he continues to make strides forward.
