Who’s Hasan Mahmud? The pacer that rattled Indian top order in Chennai test

On Thursday, during the initial Test match held in Chennai, the Indian cricket team was sent into a spin ahead of Bangladesh fast bowler Hasan Mahmud claiming wicket from their star batters including captain Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli in quick succession.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto decided to bowl first due to overcast conditions but Hasan backed his decision by making life difficult for India’s top order as the pair opened with Rohit and Yashasvi Jaiswal taking it easy at MA Chidambaram Stadium.

He almost had Rohit out before the umpire said no. Not for long though because he then made him nick one into the slips where it was collected off him for six runs.

In came Gill who played a horrible shot trying to flick; this resulted in an edge which was caught by wicket keeper Litton Das who also sent back number three for just seven balls. Kohli didn’t survive either because Hasan got him back at six runs; making three victims out of his scalps.

Since his debut on March 2020, this 24-year-old pacer has been creating a buzz in the cricketing world. For the first four years of his career just white-ball cricket was played by Hasan for Bangladesh but impressed enough to get himself a Test call against Sri Lanka in the earlier part of this year.

During Bangladesh’s historic 2-0 clean sweep over Pakistan in August, he proved his selection correct with maiden five wicket haul during Tests and finished with eight wickets overall from that series. He approached the Chennai Test with an impressive record of 14 wickets in just three matches averaging 25 runs

Hasan has 30 scalps from 22 ODIs and 18 from as many T20s. Also notable is that not only does he bowl fast but also fields efficiently as well; making him one of the best young players around who is expected to lead Bangladeshi pace attack into future.

As for first class cricket, he has so far taken part in 20 matches taking 63 wickets at an average rate of 28.76 including one five-for performance along the way.
