Ashwani Kumar kicked off his IPL journey in the most exciting way possible. At just 23 years old, the young fast bowler made a splash by taking the wicket of Ajinkya Rahane on his very first ball in his debut match. He stepped in for Satyanarayana Raju in the Mumbai Indians lineup, and he definitely made sure the team didn’t regret that decision. Rahane, the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders, completely misjudged the ball and sent it flying right to Tilak Varma, who was stationed at deep backward point. Varma fumbled the catch at first but managed to hold onto it, leading to a celebration that marked the start of Ashwani’s impressive day.
And that was just the warm-up act! The young bowler didn’t stop there; he went on to take three more wickets, dismissing Rinku Singh, Manish Pandey, and the big hitter Andre Russell. With this performance, he made history as the first Indian bowler to take four wickets on his IPL debut.
Ashwani hails from Mohali and really caught everyone’s attention with his stellar performances in the Sher-e-Punjab T20 tournament. He’s become quite popular for his skill at bowling in the death overs, and that talent got him a spot on the Mumbai Indians for a cool 30 lakh during the IPL 2025 mega auction. Before joining Mumbai, he was with the Punjab Kings in 2024, but surprisingly, he didn’t get to play even one game for them.
His cricketing career got a boost when he made his debut for Punjab in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2022, where he played in four matches and took three wickets with an economy rate of 8.5. He also has two First-Class matches and four List A games under his belt for Punjab.
Now, talking about the match itself, former captain Rohit Sharma found himself on the bench this time as Mumbai Indians won the toss and decided to bowl first against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Instead of taking the field, Rohit was marked as an Impact Substitute, while Ashwani Kumar made his debut alongside Will Jacks. Vignesh Puthur was also in the playing XI, but it’s likely he’ll make way for Rohit when Mumbai gets to chase down the target.
On the other side, KKR made a strategic move by bringing back Sunil Narine into their lineup, replacing Moeen Ali. Narine missed their previous match against the Rajasthan Royals due to illness, so his return was keenly awaited. The atmosphere was electric as the match unfolded, with fans eager to see how the rookie bowler would handle the pressure of the big stage.
