Sourav Ganguly, the president of the BCCI, is likely to rank among India’s most successful captains. While he may not have won a World Cup, under his leadership, India overcame adversity to compete in their own home against some of the top teams in the world. However, Ganguly would be the first to agree that Indian cricket has only grown since he hung up his boots and the nation has witnessed captains who have not only carried the baton but have significantly contributed to the creation of illustrious chapters in Indian cricket’s past.
Sourav Ganguly was responding to a question regarding the succession of Indian leaders since he resigned. For two of India’s most successful leaders, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, Ganguly had some kind words to say. The current captain of India, Rohit Sharma, received accolades from the BCCI president as well.
Dada was quoted, “India has produced some great captains over the years. MS Dhoni who handled the transition fantastically, and continues to bring accolades not just for India but his franchise (Chennai Super Kings).”
He added, “Then came Virat Kohli who also has a fantastic record. He was a different sort of captain, he did things differently.”
Former captain also explained the trust involved in giving the responsibility to the national cricket team and how Rohit is doing a fine job. He said, “Rohit Sharma is obviously a bit laid back who takes things in a very calm and cautious way and not someone who’s into your face all the time. We give responsibility to someone, then we want him to do the things the way we want it, and I think that’s not correct. When you back someone let him captain, give him a bit of time to give results, and then see what happens.”
On being asked about the comparisons between the captains, he said, ” Every individual is different but what matters is the result and how many wins and losses you have. I don’t compare captains, everybody has their own way of leadership.”
