Watch: Yashasvi Jaiswal gives it back to Starc as the left arm pacer tries to sledge the Southpaw

Jaiswal, the young Indian opening batter, who has made two half-centuries for India in the ongoing Boxing Day Test at Melbourne, gave a real savage reply to Australian pacer Mitchell Starc on December 30. He changed the bails and asked Jaiswal if he believed in superstitions. This incident happened in the second session of play on the fifth day in the current fourth Test match at ICC’s famed Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Starc switched the bails just to play at the mind of Jaiswal, but the 23-year-old Indian star changed the bails. Post Jaiswal’s act, Starc, who got Virat Kohli in the morning session of the Melbourne Test, asked, “Do you believe in superstition?” to which he replied saying, “I just believe in myself; that’s why I am here.”

The same Jaiswal on Monday became the fourth Indian batter after Sunil Gavaskar, Virender Sehwag, and Sachin Tendulkar to cross the landmark of 1400 runs in Tests in a calendar year, which is highly significant considering the chances of India winning in this Boxing Day Test at the MCG. The target has been set for India at 340 runs to be chased down in the fourth innings for a winning third straight Boxing Day Test at the MCG.

The left-handed batsman reached his fifty by hitting a boundary in the second session of the fifth day and has added more than seventy runs for the fourth wicket with Rishabh Pant to keep Australians at bay. Jaiswal would love to convert this good start into a big century and cap off a memorable year for him on a high note.

If he scores 170 runs in the second innings, then he will also break Tendulkar’s record for scoring the most Test runs in a calendar year for India and can even better Joe Root to become the top run-getter in Test cricket for 2024. Root, who is currently at No. 1 position in the ICC Test batter’s ranking, concluded 2024 with 1556 runs in 17 games.
