Wasim Akram Picks The Greatest IPL Opening Pair In History, Chris Gayle Excluded

The 17th edition of IPL 2023 is set to start at the end of March 2024. Few franchises have already started the preparation for this cash-rich league and experts and former legends are also giving their opinion on this tournament.

Meanwhile, former Pakistan opener Wasim Akram has picked his best opening pair in the history of IPL. Wasim Akram selected Rohit Sharma and David Warner as the greatest openers in the history of the Indian Premier League. Akram did not include Virat Kohli in his choices for opening batters, despite Kohli having opened for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in recent years.

During an interview with Star Sports, Wasim Akram expressed these views. The discussion also featured other panelists, including Dale Steyn, Tom Moody, and Matthew Hayden.

The official television broadcasters of the IPL brought them together virtually to assemble an all-time best-playing XI for the prestigious cricket league.

The entire panel reached a consensus on David Warner and Rohit Sharma as the openers for the combined IPL playing XI, considering their consistent performances over the last 16 years.

Former Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Tom Moody was the only one who selected Virat Kohli as the opening batsman for the combined XI. In contrast, Dale Steyn and Wasim Akram, among others, unanimously favored Rohit Sharma and David Warner as the openers.
