Virat Kohli, a top player on the Indian cricket team, shocked everyone by announcing his retirement from Test cricket. Known as one of the best batters today, he stepped down as captain after a successful run, ranking as the fourth most successful Test captain globally before leaving the format.
There’s been plenty of chatter about why Kohli made this decision. According to a report from Sports Today, the BCCI had hinted at possibly bringing him back as captain, especially after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. The report shared that people close to him felt he was given a signal that he might get the captaincy again after the Adelaide Test, but plans changed.
After India lost 3-1 in the recent five-match series against Australia, BCCI shifted gears and started looking for a younger captain. It seems Kohli was hopeful about returning to the captaincy, which is why he played a Ranji Trophy match for Delhi against Railways, as the BCCI required.
On another note, the IPL is set to resume on Saturday after a 10-day break caused by border tensions between India and Pakistan. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru will face off against Kolkata Knight Riders, and all eyes will be on Kohli following his Test retirement. Both teams have different goals ahead—RCB sits second on the table with 16 points from 11 matches and needs a win to secure a spot in the playoffs, while KKR is in sixth place with 11 points from 12 games and can’t afford to lose if they want to keep their hopes alive for the knockouts.
