Ex-Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) wicketkeeper-batsman Shreevats Goswami has posted an emotional message on social media amid the difficult times experienced by the India National Cricket Team in Test matches.
Goswami pointed out that the great captain Virat Kohli should not have left his favorite format as he was the one who turned India into a mighty force in red-ball cricket.
Ideally, Virat Kohli should have retired from ODIs – Shreevats Goswami
The modern batting legend Virat Kohli is presently playing only one format of international cricket as he has already hung up his shoes in Test and T20I cricket.
Kohli’s only presence for the Indian National Team has been for the 50-over matches – last tour in Australia before the month-end he faced two consecutive ducks and then scored a splendid 50 in the ODI at Sydney.
In the next month, Virat will be seen during the home ODI series against the South Africa National Cricket Team; however, prior to that, he has drawn criticism from his former teammate Shreevats Goswami, who has labeled his retirement from Test cricket as wrong.
Taking to X amid India’s horror show in the ongoing Test series against South Africa, Shreevats Goswami stated that they miss the presence of Virat Kohli in Test cricket a lot and he should have continued with the very same format.
“Virat should have saved himself playing ODIs and playing only test cricket until his last day. Test cricket is in short supply of him. Not only as a player but also as the guy who brought the energy, the love, and the passion for playing for India. He made the team believe they could win in any conditions. #INDVSA,” Shreevats Goswami tweeted on X.
It is important to point out that Virat Kohli made a public announcement of his retirement from Test cricket on 12 May 2025 after an illustrious career that lasted from his first appearance on 20 June 2011 until 3 January 2025 (his last Test match).
He can work his way to the fourth position.
Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli had the same position – Parthiv Patel on Dhruv Jurel
In an interview with Star Sports, Parthiv Patel, the ex-Indian wicketkeeper, said that the young batsman, Dhruv Jurel, who plays at No.4 in the Guwahati Test, deserved to be criticized and that he took a poor shot to get out for a duck in 11 balls against Marco Jansen.
“Even if the Tea break had been near, this shot was still not on. He is batting because of his score and he has scored a lot. But here, he wasn’t in command at all. When the ball is near the right shoulder of a right-handed batter and you play it towards the leg side, you are not in control. That ball usually goes in the air, and that is what happened here,” the cricketer-turned-commentator expressed his thoughts.
“Moreover, when facing Marco Jansen, it is crucial to think about the extra bounce since he is that tall. He has missed a third consecutive chance. He is getting to bat at No. 4. Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli used to bat at No. 4. Shubman Gill is the current No. 4 batsman. He, too, has been scoring a lot of runs,” he concluded.
“The pull shot is Dhruv Jurel’s strength – again, it really needs to be the case since when it is your strength, you still have to take into consideration who the bowler is. Two of his dismissals in the 1st match can still be a great learning point for him because the conditions were not that good and he was the one under pressure,” said Cheteshwar Pujara.
