Arguably the first match of India in the Champions Trophy 2025 that aced Indian batter Virat Kohli would remember remarkably. After becoming the player with the joint most catches for India in ODIs, Kohli has gone past Ricky Ponting and is now the second-highest run-getter of all time in ICC ODI events.
The 36 years old needed 13 runs to go past Ponting, and with that 22, he crossed Ponting as the second-highest run-gatherer in the list. One pointer is that Ricky Ponting was second with his tally of 2336 runs in ICC ODI events in 60 innings as an overall during his career.
In stark contrast, Kohli took just 50 innings to go past a tally achieved by Ponting. Interestingly enough, the 36-year-old comes in second to Tendulkar, who scored 2719 runs in 58 innings through ICC ODIs in his career.
As for the India-Bangladesh encounter, Rohit Sharma-led India restricted their rivals quite a fair bit in Dubai. The contest commenced with Bangladesh batting first after winning the toss. The innings fell flat with the departure of Tanzid Hasan and Soumya Sarkar early on. Furthermore, after the top order’s failure to go big, Jaker Ali and Towhid Hridoy’s performances saw Bangladesh exceed a total of 228 runs in the first innings of the game.
As for India, Mohammed Shami was the highest wicket-taker in the first innings with five wickets in hand. Harshit Rana clinched three wickets and Axar Patel two.
