Virat Kohli reveals how MS Dhoni and Gary Kristen helped him in the initial days of his career

Virat Kohli is regarded as one of the best batsmen these days, so he has indeed become famous worldwide. His first leap onto the international platform was leading India to a U-19 World Cup win. His performances in domestic cricket also created some buzz for him among the national selectors. Virat revealed in the latest episode of the ‘RCB Bold Diaries’ podcast that he had never been considered a natural match-winner but that his yearning to win a place had made it into the Indian team. He talked about how for him, MS Dhoni and Gary Kirsten entered the picture and backed him all the way since the day he started his international career.

“I was pretty realistic about my skills because I had seen a lot of other players and didn’t think my game was up to their level. The one thing I had was determination. If I wanted my team to win, I was ready to do whatever it took.”

He said determination was really key to forcing his way into the Indian team, and both Gary and MS were very clear about backing him at No. 3. He felt about them encouraging him not to be bogged down or hold back on anything because they fully believed his gritty attitude would get him into a flow.

“They told me what I do for the team, my energy and involvement, really matters. They wanted me to play like that. I was never seen as someone who could just turn the game around at any moment. But I made it clear that I was in it for the long haul and wouldn’t back down. That’s the support I got.”
