Virat Kohli created this unwanted record in team India’s opening game against Bangladesh in the ICC champions trophy

The Indian team started their Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a thumping victory over Bangladesh. The two sides faced each other at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday, February 20. This match made many records.

Several stars put in excellent performances and inscribed their names in the records. Among the many names was ace India batter Virat Kohli as well. The 36-year-old equalled Mohammed Azharuddin’s record of having taken the most outfield catches for India in ODIs.

Also, in ICC events with his knock of 22, Kohli surpassed Ricky Ponting to become the second highest run scorer. Amidst the glorious record, Kohli also etched his name in an unwanted record. Notably, Kohli was castled by Rishad Hossain. Another run-out against a leg spinner meant that the 36-year-old has now become the player with most runs-out against leg spinners in ODI cricket.

In fact, this was Kohli’s 23rd dismissal against leg spinners, followed by Mushfiqur Rahim and Kane Williamson, who have 22 dismissals each. Shakib Al Hasan rounds off this record, sitting third with 20 dismissals.

Kohli came in after Rohit Sharma with an innings of 41 runs at the top of the order. Kohli aimed to take the Men in Blue home, but he added a mere 22 runs before being dismissed.

The fighting spirit of Shubman Gill, with his second consecutive ODI century, and the performance of KL Rahul, carried the winning impetus for India. India finished the chase in 46.3 overs for just six.

Players with most dismissals to leg spinners in ODIs:

Virat Kohli: 23 dismissals

  1. Mushfiqur Rahim, Kane Williamson: 22 dismissals
  2. Shakib Al Hasan: 20 dismissals
  3. Kusal Mendis, Sikandar Raza: 18 dismissals
