Shubman Gill has really stepped up as a captain for the Gujarat Titans, said Vikram Solanki, the team’s Director of Cricket. In his second year as captain, Gill seems to be handling things well in IPL 2025, both with his batting and his decisions on the field. The Titans are currently sitting in fourth place with 14 points from 10 matches and have a good shot at making the playoffs for the first time since 2023.
Gill was a bit overwhelmed during his first year as captain, but this season, with a stronger team, he looks much more relaxed handling the pressures of the IPL. He’s really grown into the captaincy role, Solanki mentioned just before their match against the Mumbai Indians. When you have someone as talented as Shubman, there’s always a question about how well they can handle being a leader. But he’s thriving under the responsibility.
Gill, who won the Orange Cap in 2023, had a tougher time last season with 426 runs in 12 matches. But in IPL 2025, he’s already scored 465 runs in just 10 matches with a strike rate of 162, which is his best yet. He and Sai Sudharsan have created an amazing opening partnership, putting up 628 runs together—the highest for any pair this season—173 runs more than the next best combination.
When asked about Gill and Sudharsan’s success, Solanki credited their hard work. They both approach the game the same way and have a solid technique, especially facing the new ball, he said. Having played red-ball cricket has really helped them prepare.
Gujarat is eager to grab two points in Mumbai, but they’ll have a tough opponent in the five-time champions who are on a five-match unbeaten streak. Still, Gujarat won the last encounter between the teams by 36 runs.
