Dinesh Karthik would have been the focus of the third and final T20I match between India and Australia if it weren’t for Axar Patel and a tonne of luck. Not for an act of bravery, but for a mistake. It occurred during the third T20I of the series on Sunday in Hyderabad, where both teams are vying for a series victory after India blanked Australia’s lead following a fiery effort in the game that was delayed by rain earlier this week in Nagpur.
It took place in the eighth over of the game, which was the series-deciding match between India and Australia. A slower delivery down the leg from Yuzvendra Chahal caused Maxwell to pivot while pulling as the ball was thrown behind square. He quickly left for a moment before reluctantly coming back for another, even though his companion Steve Smith was very certain. While this was happening, Axar retrieved the ball with ease, fired it down to the striker’s end, and then castled down the stumps. However, it was still unclear whether Maxwell arrived in time.
However, the replay revealed a different narrative. When Axar’s direct throw shook the stumps, Maxwell was undoubtedly still a long way from the crease, but it appeared as if wicketkeeper Karthik had already disturbed the stumps before being struck by the stumps. The dismissal was examined more carefully by the third umpire. Dinesh Karthik was undoubtedly at fault for that error, but he was extremely lucky because only one bail was compromised as a result of his action. The other bail was securely fastened and only became loose when the ball struck it.

Upon seeing a replay of the Indian players’ reactions to that dismissal a few deliveries later, captain Rohit was seen to be visibly upset by Karthik’s behavior but broke out laughing when the 37-year-old managed to survive it. This was an unexpected response from the skipper.
