Shubman Gill joined the double-century club in ODIs on Wednesday (January 18), becoming the most recent batter to do so. Against New Zealand in the opening ODI of the three-match series in Hyderabad, the 23-year-old reached the milestone in the last over of the Indian innings. In 50 overs of cricket, Gill is the fifth Indian and eighth overall batter to smash a double century.
Gill scored 208 runs in just 149 balls where he got 19 fours and nine sixes. He broke Ishan Kishan’s record, who had done it last month at the age of 24, to become the youngest batter to make a double century in ODIs.
Post first ODI between India and New Zealand, Ishan Kishan, who scored 210 against Bangladesh on December 10, 2022, and Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who has three ODI double centuries to his name, welcomed Gill into the exclusive group of batters with 200 ODI innings.
In an effort to the mockery of Ishan, Rohit asked him why he didn’t get to play the previous 3 matches after scoring a double-century last month against Bangladesh. Rohit is the only hitter to hit multiple double centuries and holds the record for the highest individual score in ODIs (264).
“Ishan yaar, apne 200 bana k teen match nahi khela yaar?” Rohit asked Ishan. The young wicket-keeper batter responded with a hilarious swag and said, “Bhaiya captain to aap hai.” Hear Ishan’s reply all the three cricketers burst out of laughter.
India won the first ODI against New Zealand by 12 runs in the series opener.
