Marnus Labuschagne’s plan to get some game time before the big World Test Championship final against South Africa hit another snag. He played his first of two County Championship matches for Glamorgan but struggled with his batting performance, failing to make an impact in both innings. Aiming to get more time at the crease and settle in before the important match on June 11, he joined Glamorgan hoping to adapt to the English conditions ahead of Australia’s title defense.
After getting out for a duck in the first innings, Labuschagne was looking to bounce back as Glamorgan chased a modest 66-run target against Northamptonshire. Unfortunately, he only managed to last eight balls, scoring just 4 runs before being sent back to the dressing room. In the first innings, he came in when Glamorgan was at 46/1, but his attempt to find his rhythm was quickly shut down when South Australia’s Harry Conway got him out after just seven deliveries, with the ball edging to Justin Broad. The wicket celebration from Conway was a stark contrast to Labuschagne’s disappointment following his lackluster start after being away on paternity leave.
His recent struggles put more pressure on him with questions arising about his place in Australia’s final lineup. Though he made the squad, his recent form—232 runs across five Tests at an average of 25.78 during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India—has raised doubts. In a bid to regain his touch, Labuschagne also went on a tour to Sri Lanka, where he faced tough spinning conditions but could only manage 50 runs in two Tests.
