How Did Tony de Zorzi Make The Cut Despite Not Featuring In SA20 2026?

South Africa has made an announcement of the squad of 15 players which will participate in the T20 World Cup 2026 that is starting from the 7th of February. The South African team contained some surprises, among which were Tony de Zorzi and Jason Smith, to mention a few. However, two of the most talked-about omissions were Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs.

Exclusions are always a matter of discussion, but there are lots of opinions surrounding the choice of de Zorzi.

How Did Tony de Zorzi Make The Cut Despite Not Featuring In SA20 2026?

Tony de Zorzi is a player of the Super Giants in Durban, but he has not yet played in the SA20 2026. In the last three editions, he has participated in only 11 matches and has not been a great performer. The 28-year-old has scored 189 runs with an average of 17 and a strike rate of 129.

In his entire T20 career, he has scored 1387 runs at an average of 19.53 and a strike rate of 119, which is not very impressive. Nevertheless, he has been picked over Stubbs and Rickelton. Thus, it is not surprising that the fans are questioning the decision. But it is indeed a well-considered decision with reasons underlying it.

The T20 World Cup 2026 is going to be held jointly in India and Sri Lanka, where the wickets are generally slower and that is a great support for spinners. Batting on such wickets is completely different and poses a greater challenge for the teams coming from outside the subcontinent.

Recently, South Africa won the Test series in Pakistan and India, where Tony de Zorzi was one of the main contributors. He scored a century and a half-century in two Tests on the spin-friendly grounds of Pakistan. Then he made 103 runs in a difficult series for batters in India. He also made some good runs in the white-ball games, scoring 33 off 16 on his T20I debut and 76 in the next ODI series. His 39 off 35 in the first ODI against India also indicated that he was capable of playing under those conditions.

Besides the statistics, de Zorzi proved to be a player who could read the spinners well and had a variety of shots in his toolbox. In his white-ball cricket, he displayed a significant improvement in his aggression and was not afraid to take risks.

Moreover, he provides an extra left-hand batting option for South African team. Against the teams that have a good amount of left-arm orthodox and leg-break spin bowlers, de Zorzi can be a very useful batter to have in the squad.Recently, South Africa won the Test series in Pakistan and India, where Tony de Zorzi was one of the main contributors.
