Tim Southee has announced his resignation from the post of the captain New Zealand Test Team and handed over the captain’s duties to Tom Latham. Latham will now lead the team on a full-time basis after having led the team in nine matches earlier and will do so during the forthcoming tour to India. Southee, who made his debut for New Zealand in 2008 and took 382 wickets from 102 test matches will be one of the senior members of the team.
The 35-year-old made his intention clear that he wants to re-establish his public performance, saying, “ I’ve always tried to put the team first throughout my career and believe this decision is best for the team.” He stated that he will concentrate on getting back to his best and helping New Zealand with playing.
Southee’s reign as captain saw him lead a 14-test match series in which the team won 6 lost 6 and drew 2 since December 2022, with Latham now ready to take charge of a 15 man squad going to India. He even though stepping down reiterated that he will be there for Latham and the other young players saying, “I’ll be there to support Tom, as he has done for me over the years”
NZ coach Gary Stead was grateful for Southee’s service and his willingness to put the team above himself saying, “Tim’s made the decision with the team’s best interests at heart. He’s a fantastic player and leader, and we still see him playing a major role in our Test side.”
New Zealand Cricket CEO Scott Weenink also commended his statesmanship: “Tim’s devotion to the squad is the quality of a leader, and he will still be a factor regardless of the position.”
Latham is now tasked with the responsibilities of piloting New Zealand against India, with an array of exciting nimble bowlers including Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, and some of the youngsters like Will O’Rourke and Ben Sears.
