Gujarat Titans (GT), one of IPL’s newest teams in 2022, is on the verge of change in ownership as Ahmedabad-based pharmaceuticals firm Torrent is about to buy a majority share in the franchise. CVC Capital Partners (Irelia Company Pvt Ltd), the current majority owners of Gujarat Titans, have formally sent a request to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to approve the ownership switch. It set a precedent where the active franchise could switch majority owner for the first time. The announcement also stated that Gujarat Titans is now the costliest IPL team in terms of market purchase value.
Torrent has entered into a pact for a 66 per cent stake of Gujarat Titans, within the entire valuation of the franchise pegged at approximately Rs 7,500 crore (US$ 856 million), according to a report by the Economic Times.
The valuation fee of Rs 7,500 crore, and the transfer action of Torrent, would make Gujarat Titans the costliest Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise in terms of paid value.
This would be more than the Rs 7,090 crore, which was paid by RPSG Group chairman and founder Sanjiv Goenka to take over the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in 2021.
By brands and overall worth, CSK, RCB, KKR, and MI lead the way; however, none of these franchises has ever seen a big shakeup in terms of investment and ownership.
If the takeover receives approval, CVC Capital will still hold a 34 per cent stake in the franchise. They had earlier paid Rs 5,625 crore during the acquisition of the franchise in 2021 beating the Adani Group (Rs 5,100 cr) and Torrent itself (Rs 4,653 cr) in bidding.
According to a Cricbuzz report, it will not shake up the management of the franchise with the ownership. Shubman Gill continues as captain while Ashish Nehra remains head coach.
Under Nehra, Gujarat Titans have had two extremely successful seasons, winning the IPL title in its very first year in 2022 during Hardik Pandya’s captaincy.
In 2023, GT reached the final once again but was unable to clinch the title as it lost against Chennai Super Kings’ flailing hands.
2024 turned out as the darkest year for the franchise wherein they finished at the bottom of the table, i.e., 8th position.
GT boosted their pack of players with stars like Jos Buttler, Kagiso Rabada and Washington Sundar in the IPL mega auction 2025, to name just a few added to Gill, Rashid Khan and B Sai Sudharshan.
