Rohit Sharma, Test and ODI captain of India, has not been performing face as one would expect, be it with the bat or as a captain. In that time, the right-handed batter hasn’t produced any credible inning, neither has the team reaped benefits, especially in terms of Test cricket. Be it India’s Test series against New Zealand at home or the marquee Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, none of the contests saw Rohit being up to standard in both the departments. With close to 38 years and a doubt about Rohit’s international future, he called time off T20I cricket last year, yet is still very much active in ODIs and Tests.
As questions about Rohit’s future loom, a Times of India report indicates that the Board of Control for Cricket has considered Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal as possible options to succeed in the Test match format.
Jasprit Bumrah should also ring familiar bells as possible for the role of captain; however, the report indicated that his fitness could cloud his prospects as a national leader. Another candidate was Shubman Gill, although his form would not inspire the confidence that the board would have liked, the report said.
“In terms of a long Test series, or any more than two or three matches in a season, Bumrah’s chances will always remain in doubt. The selectors probably want a more stable choice. Gill is seen as a captaincy candidate who has not had the best of runs. Rishabh Pant is also a strong candidate, and maybe someone like Yashasvi Jaiswal could be groomed for the role,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by the report.
