Captain Kane Williamson of New Zealand was classy in his acceptance of the team’s loss to Afghanistan while praising them for their decisive victory. At Providence Stadium in Guyana, West Indies, on June 8, Saturday, Afghanistan crushed New Zealand, winning by an overwhelming 84 runs.
Afghanistan won the Twenty20 Internationals against New Zealand for the first time ever, and they did it in a very convincing manner. With two straight victories and an outstanding net run rate, the Rashid Khan-led team has emerged as a real power in the T20 World Cup 2024.
During the post-match presentation, Williamson acknowledged that the resurgent Afghanistan had outperformed the Kiwis in all aspects.
“Congratulations to Afghanistan, they simply outplayed us in all facets. To get a total like that on a fiddly surface, they kept wickets in hand and played it beautifully. Not good enough from us. Quick turnaround, we have to regroup quickly and onto the next challenge. The boys were focused and were working hard in preparation for this game, but it was not our best performance. We will chat about it, review and move on quickly. It (the games) comes thick and fast, and we need to be better,” Williamson said.
In the T20 World Cup, New Zealand suffered their greatest loss in terms of runs scored. The Black Caps were reeling at 28 for 3, and Fazalhaq Farooqi got off to a similar start as he did against Uganda. Soon after, Rashid entered the game and deceived the New Zealand hitters to help Farooqi and himself take four wickets.
Williamson criticized the team’s careless fielding as well as their at-bat performance. “Once you have the bat in your hand, you should form a partnership. They were quite good. Their talent was really evident. When you are not putting things together in the field, it is tough to field in the first ten overs on a surface like that, according to Williamson.
The clash against the West Indies would be a must-win for black caps as Afghanistan have already put on foot into the Super 8 stages winning 2 matches on trot.
