In the first Test match of the series, India took a tough loss against England, who chased down a target of 371 to win by five wickets. This marks India’s record for the most individual hundreds in a losing effort. During the match, India had five players score centuries: Yashasvi Jaiswal (101), Shubman Gill (147), and Rishabh Pant (134) in the first innings, followed by KL Rahul (137) and Pant again with 118 in the second.
It’s pretty rare for a team to lose after four players hit hundreds; the last time it happened was back in 1928 when Australia faced England in Melbourne. On the final day, England needed to score 350 runs to win. Only once before has a team gone after a higher total on the last day—Australia with 404 against England in 1948.
In total, the match saw 835 runs scored by India, which is the fourth-highest for a losing side. Overall, both teams combined for 1673 runs in this Test—making it the highest ever between England and India. The previous record was 1614 runs in a 1990 match that ended in a draw.
On the final day, England’s chase was impressive, led by Ben Duckett’s 149, with solid support from Zak Crawley, Joe Root, and Jamie Smith. They got to 373/5 in just 82 overs to secure the win and take a 1-0 lead in the series. Duckett was named player of the match for his outstanding performance.
