The leaked timetable of the future ICC T20 World Cup 2026 has unfolded two totally contrasting narratives for the co-hosts India and Sri Lanka. The reigning champions, India, will kick off their tournament against the USA at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on February 8.
As per Cricbuzz, the Indian cricket team, the world’s number one-ranked team, has been placed in one of the most convenient groups of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. However, the eighth-ranked Sri Lanka team has been assigned the worst group among all the countries participating in this mega event.
ICC T20 World Cup 2026 schedule shows a significant benefit to India
Sri Lanka has been put together with Australia, Zimbabwe, Ireland, and Oman. Even though Ireland and Oman are not highly ranked, still they are known for making it tough for the opponents in the knockout rounds in the shortest format of the game.
In contrast, India is in a group along with Pakistan, Netherlands, Namibia, and the USA. Netherlands, Namibia, and the USA are strong but not as formidable as Zimbabwe, Ireland and Oman.
The top two teams from each group advance, so the duo of India and Pakistan have a very much clear route to the Super Eight stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
England and South Africa struggle as the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 format is revealed
On the other hand, the tournament features four groups, each consisting of five teams, and one of them is extremely dangerous. England and West Indies have been drawn with Bangladesh (a strong team in the subcontinent), Nepal (a promising team), and Italy (a debutant team).
South Africa, last edition’s runners-up, is in for another uphill task. Their pool consists of New Zealand and Afghanistan, besides the UAE and Canada, who are all pretty much regarded as fearless cricket-playing teams. But still, the main threat for South Africa will come from New Zealand and Afghanistan.
The format of the T20 World Cup will be unchanged whereby the leading two teams from each pool will qualify for the Super Eight round. After that, the top four teams will be decided on and will compete in the semifinals, from which the two will emerge and through the final they will be crowned the winners.
The India-Pakistan encounter is set for February 15
In contrast, India will kick off their ICC T20 World Cup title defense versus the USA on February 8 in Ahmedabad, followed by meeting with Namibia on February 12 in Delhi, and then Pakistan on February 15 in Colombo, and the Netherlands on February 18 in Mumbai.
Nevertheless, the focus will be on the India-Pakistan showdown, and in case the defending champs make it, their semifinal will take place in Mumbai on March 5. India’s share will be in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, and Ahmedabad, while Kandy and Colombo will be for Sri Lanka’s share.
The final of the showpiece event will most probably be held in Ahmedabad, but if Pakistan reaches the title clash, then it will be moved to Colombo. Besides Mumbai, Kolkata is also a possible venue for one of the semifinals, and there is also the possibility of Colombo being the venue for one semifinal and the final if Pakistan makes it.
