SunRisers Hyderabad are almost out of the race as far as the Indian Premier League goes in 2025, after losing to Gujarat Titans on Friday, May 2. They had just ended their vacation in the Maldives but were not quite prepared for the game. The team showed all signs of losing steam both as it was struggling to keep up and got outplayed in both innings during the match at Narendra Modi Stadium.
Needing to win the match, whereas SRH was not too willing to put up a fight. Mohammed Shami, one of India’s best fast bowlers, was having a very bad day. He couldn’t find a rhythm and conceded 48 runs in three overs.
The early problems experienced by not only SRH captain Pat Cummins but the entire team placed them in a significantly unfavorable situation immediately. There would be a good chance for the SunRisers that day, with Shubman Gill in full form at the batting crease and the GT top order who was firing all guns blazing. Cummins later admitted that they let it slip.
“Our batting in powerplay was not good. I am as guilty as the rest. We gave them an extra 20-30 runs, which makes a little difference. Perhaps, it might have felt possible chasing 200 if we had held on to a catch or two,” Cummins said.
It is a season of failure for SRH, last year’s runners-up, and so misses out on most of the matches due to sliders in pitch conditions and auction buys not performing as expected. It has felt very slightly off all season what would have been a solid squad.
He did not shy away from speaking the truth about their bowling. According to him, they are too loose with their deliveries. He agreed that the season is basically done for SRH. They still have a mathematically slim chance but they need to win every game now to have any sort of realistic chance of qualifying for playoffs which does not seem probable.
Without directly putting it in that way, Cummins just remarked that probably now it is time for the team to look ahead and greatly emphasized keeping the core group strong. “We can still have some hope. The big auction was last year, and the core of the group will be around for three years. So, there’s still a lot to play for,” he said.
With this defeat, Sunrisers Hyderabad is now second from the bottom in the table with just 6 points from 10 matches, narrowly above the Chennai Super Kings, who have a strong chance of finishing last this season.
