Sunil Gavaskar Surprising Pick For Opening Batters In T20 World Cup 2024

Legendary Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar has given his opinion on the opening batters of team India in the T20 World Cup 2024. Gavaskar earlier criticized Virat Kohli for slow batting and an average strike rate. However, Gavaskar has now picked Kohli as one of the openers in the T20 World Cup.

Virat Kohli performed exceptionally well in the recently finished Indian Premier League season and scored over 700 runs. However, Kohli faced criticism from former India opener Sunil Gavaskar, who expressed concern about Kohli’s strike rate.

Interestingly, Gavaskar feels that the left-handed player Yashasvi Jaiswal hasn’t been performing well recently enough to justify being positioned at the top of the batting order for the Indian team.

While having a conversation with Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as openers. The way Kohli has batted, particularly in the second half of the IPL, he deserves to open the batting with Rohit Sharma, the captain. Seriously, good players are good players. They can bat anywhere, you know whether they’re right or left hand.”

Gavaskar further added, “So no, I don’t think. It’s very good to talk on television about left hand-right hand combination, good players are good players. In Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, you have got 2 terrific and 2 fantastic batters. The kind of form Kohli has shown in the IPL, he has to open the batting.”
