Sunil Gavaskar thinks that Rajat Patidar’s relaxed style as captain has really helped Royal Challengers Bengaluru find a way to succeed in the IPL after struggling for so long. RCB has started strong this season, scoring their first win at Chepauk in 17 years and breaking a six-match losing streak at Wankhede Stadium. Gavaskar said, “Patidar looks free as a leader. After 17 years without a title, they finally get what it takes to win. With a chill captain, others are stepping up and using their experience to push the team forward.”
He also praised Dinesh Karthik, the mentor for RCB. “He’s got senior players ready to help, plus a solid support staff. People don’t talk enough about how much DK influences the younger guys. He spends time with them, giving advice. Rajat is lucky to have that kind of team — one that really wants to win.”
Speaking of Virat Kohli, Gavaskar noted that his willingness to play lofted shots earlier in the innings has made him a much bigger threat this season. “In the last season and a half, he’s been looking to take risks right from the start. Before, he’d play those big shots later in the innings, but now he’s hitting over the infield for boundaries from ball one. That change in his approach has caught bowlers off guard.”
Gavaskar also had some words for Rohit Sharma of the Mumbai Indians, suggesting he needs to be more careful with his shot choices. “When he gets out in the power play, it’s tough for the team. I think he needs to work on his shot selection. You want to be aggressive in those first six overs, but it’s important to pick the right risks.”
He wrapped up by saying that star bowler Jasprit Bumrah, after returning from injury, will keep improving as he plays more. “It was great to see him bowling at his usual pace, over 140 km/h. I think after a few more matches, he’ll get back to hitting 150 km/h as he gains confidence in his back and feels good enough to bowl full tilt.”
