Sunil Gavaskar, one of the legendary Indian cricketers, believes that Rohit Sharma is not going to be the only one who is going to be thinking about his career as Team India takes off into the next World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. India’s captain Rohit Sharma has cast some doubts over the future of his Test career with the decision to skip the fifth Test of the Australia tour. However, Gavaskar seems to be of the opinion that not just Rohit, but the management may have to think about a few other senior cricketers too.
The ongoing Test at Sydney is going to be the last for India in the current WTC cycle, while the journey of India in the next 2025-27 WTC cycle kicks off way more than six months later, in June, with a tour of England.
“If India does not qualify for the WTC Final, then I think that the selection committee will want to look, not just at Rohit Sharma, but also some others,” said Gavaskar, speaking on Star Sports.
“They might be saying, ‘Look, are they going to be available for the 2027 World Test Championship Final?’ In case India does well in the next two years. So that should be the selection committee’s thinking,” Gavaskar added.
Someone like this is what Gavaskar might probably have meant. Though Gavaskar definitely has Rohit not in the long-term agendas of the think tank, he may have also hinted the same in the case of fellow veteran stalwart Virat Kohli, and possibly even Ravindra Jadeja.
All three are now older than 36, as they have reached the twilight of their careers.
“I think Rohit Sharma, who will be 38 at the start of the WTC cycle between 2025 and 2027, will not fit into their plans as a 40-year-old,” Gavaskar said.
On the other hand, Rohit Sharma said that his decision to skip the fifth Test was taken keeping only that game in consideration and did not have any impact on his future.
“I am not someone who believes in what happens after five months. I’m a present-day person. This is not a retirement decision. I am not moving away from the game. For this match, though, I’m out because I am not scoring with the bat. Five months down the line, there are no guarantees I will not score. For all, it changes every day. I believe in myself,” he said, quoting Rohit on Star Sports.
“I’ve got to be real about this as well. This is such a long-duration game that no outsider can determine when it is time for me to go, or sit out or lead the team. Matured, sensible and father of two, I know what I want out of life,” he concluded.
Former Indian opener slams Shubman Gill amid his poor form in red ball cricket says…
Kris Srikkanth, the former Indian opening batter who served as captain and chief selector, vented his ire against Shubman Gill for his poor performance during the recently concluded five-match Test series between India and Australia. Gill, who made his Indian Test debut at the 2020 Boxing Day Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground, featured in three matches of the 2024-25 edition of Border-Gavaskar, batting as a No. 3 but scoring just 93 runs.
In a conversation on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth, the 1985-87 Player of the Series award winner in the India-Australia Test series, had the following to say about Gill: “an overrated cricketer.”
He said, “I have always maintained…
