The Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings (PBKS) just made a big statement by landing in the top two of the IPL points table for the first time in 11 years. Chasing a target of 185 runs, PBKS had some great performances from Priyansh Arya and Josh Inglis, who both scored fifties and helped their team clinch a comfortable win.
Now, PBKS locked in their spot for Qualifier 1, while MI is set to play in Eliminator 1. Sunil Gavaskar couldn’t say enough good things about PBKS after the match. He also mentioned that just because someone shines in state leagues doesn’t guarantee success, but Arya’s seven sixes show he’s got skill. Gavaskar praised their choices for international players too, giving them full credit.
Priyansh Arya proved he could keep his cool as a rookie, while Josh Inglis turned the game around with a big performance. They chased down 185 runs comfortably, with their 109-run partnership off 59 balls playing a huge role. Captain Shreyas Iyer finished it off with a six against Trent Boult to seal the win. The PBKS bowlers also did a decent job, limiting MI to 184 runs at a ground known for high-scoring games.
Both teams had already made it to the playoffs, but this win guaranteed PBKS a top-two finish, giving them some extra chances to reach the final. This is the first time the Punjab Kings have reached the playoffs since 2014, and they’re heading back to their home ground in Mullanpur for Qualifier 1 on May 29. The Eliminator will take place the next day, and the full playoff lineup will be confirmed after the match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday.
