Stuart Law, a former Australian cricketer, has been named the head coach of Nepal’s men’s cricket team for the upcoming two years. He steps in for Monty Desai, who finished his two-year term earlier this year in February. The Cricket Association of Nepal made the announcement on X, sharing the news about Law taking charge of the national team.
Law isn’t new to coaching—he comes with a solid background, having coached various international teams. His most recent gig was with the USA men’s team, where he not only achieved a historic T20I series win over Bangladesh but also led them to the Super Eights of the 2024 T20 World Cup. Unfortunately, after just over seven months in that role, he parted ways with the team in October 2024.
Throughout his coaching career, Law has held roles with Bangladesh and the West Indies and even served as the interim coach for Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. One of his biggest accomplishments came in 2012 when he guided Bangladesh to their first-ever Asia Cup final. Before his coaching days, Law played professionally, representing Australia in 54 ODIs and one Test match.
His predecessor, Monty Desai, oversaw a time of development for the Nepal team. Under Desai’s leadership, the team had notable victories, including clean sweeps against the USA in T20Is and Canada in ODIs early this year. However, the team faced tough challenges in big tournaments. Nepal made their second appearance in the T20 World Cup in 2024 but didn’t manage to secure any wins. They also participated in the ODI Asia Cup in 2023 but unfortunately came home without a victory.
As Law takes on this new role, his first challenge will be a crucial tri-series against Scotland and the Netherlands this June, part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2. Right now, Nepal is sitting near the bottom of the League 2 table, making this series a vital chance to turn things around.
