The veteran Australian batter Steve Smith has recently shown his remarkable skills in the shortest format of the game. Throughout the current BBL (Big Bash League) season, the star batter has been nothing but brilliant for the Sydney Sixers, and the T20 World Cup is around the corner, Smith’s dream of playing in the tournament is still very unrealistic.
It is important to point out that Australia has already unveiled its provisional squad for the T20 World Cup; barring any last-minute injuries to the players, the chances of Smith’s inclusion in the World Cup squad are extremely slim.
Yet, the experienced batter is not eyeing the World Cup but rather the Olympics. “I always want to play for Australia in big tournaments. But I think that ship’s sailed. I reckon they’ve got two opening batters that are doing pretty well. I’m relaxed doing what I can here and having some fun,” Steve Smith was reported by ESPNcricinfo.
“My major goal, as I have previously stated, is to make the team when the Olympics come around. I would be very excited to be part of it. That would be really great. Just keep on doing what I’m doing and who knows?” he continued.
George Bailey commented on Steve Smith’s case
In addition, Cricket Australia’s chief of selectors, George Bailey, stepped up and commented on the situation about the situation, labeling it as a wonderful headache to have.
“Isn’t it a wonderful dilemma? He is performing exceptionally well, just like the past two years in BBL, in a position where we have great depth. But if there were changes and something was needed there, undoubtedly his name would be among the possibilities,” Bailey stated.
