Sri Lanka’s Test Skipper To Step Down From Captaincy Role After Ireland Series

Dimuth Karunaratne has decided to leave the captaincy post of the Sri Lankan Test team following a 2-0 defeat in the two-Test series against New Zealand. Karunaratne has informed the Sri Lanka Cricket selection committee that he will relinquish the captaincy after the two-Test series against Ireland. However, an official announcement has yet to be made by the board regarding this.

Sri Lanka had to face defeat by an inning and 58 runs at the hands of New Zealand in the second Test match played in Wellington. A thrilling defeat in the first Test in Christchurch dashed Sri Lanka’s dream of reaching the World Championship final.

After losing the first test match against New Zealand, Skipper Dimuth Karunaratne revealed, “I have informed the selectors that it’s good to appoint a new captain for the new test cycle, so I am ready to step down after the Ireland series.”

However, the Sri Lankan team ended at the fifth spot in the World Test Championship 2021-23 table with a winning percentage of 44.44. After the Ireland series, the new cycle of the World test Championship will be started and looking at the new cycle Dimuth took this decision because the new skipper will lead the whole cycle. And this also indicates that Dimuth may take retirement from red ball cricket.

He was first appointed as a stand-in captain in 2019, replacing that time regular skipper Dinesh Chandimal. Under his captaincy, the Sri Lankan team became the first Asian team to win the test series in South Africa against the host. He led Sri Lanka in 26 Tests, winning 10 matches, losing nine and drawing seven of them.

Ireland will tour Sri Lanka next month for a two-Test series, which begins on 13 April. Both Tests will be played at the Galle International Stadium.
