After India’s loss at Lord’s in the third Test against England, former captain Sourav Ganguly spoke up. He was a bit disappointed as he thought India should have got 193 considering the way they have been batting this series.
The match ended with Mohammed Siraj getting out to Shoaib Bashir. The ball rolled back onto the stumps after hitting the pitch and India’s resistance ended. Ravindra Jadeja was left stranded as India lost by 22 runs.
India had been in control for most of the game. Jasprit Bumrah was the star, taking 7 wickets including a 5-wicket haul in the first innings.
Ganguly said, I am a bit disappointed since India has shown great batting this series, so they should have won this one. This team has great batting talent. I think they will feel the loss more than I do.
In the match, England won the toss and batted. They were 44/2 soon but a 109-run partnership between Ollie Pope (44 off 104 balls) and Joe Root (104 off 199 balls) and an 84-run stand for the 8th wicket between Brydon Carse (56 off 83 balls) and Jamie Smith (51 off 56 balls) took England to 387. Bumrah’s 5/74 was the highlight of India’s bowling.
In India’s second innings, Yashasvi Jaiswal got out early but a 61-run partnership between Karun Nair (26 off 46 balls) and KL Rahul and a 141-run stand between KL Rahul (100 off 177 balls) and Rishabh Pant (74 off 112 balls) took India close to England’s score. A solid 50 from Ravindra Jadeja (72 off 131 balls) and runs from Nitish Kumar Reddy (30) and Washington Sundar (23) took India to 387 and level the scores. Chris Woakes (3/84) was England’s best bowler in this.In England’s second innings, India kept the pressure on except for a 67-run 5th wicket stand between Root (40 off 96 balls) and Stokes (33 off 96 balls). Sundar (4/22) then bowled a match-winning spell, breaking the middle order and bowling out England for 192. India now needed 193 to win.
In their chase, India were 82/7. Jadeja (61* off 181 balls) fought back, building partnerships with the lower order and putting pressure on England. Siraj’s unlucky dismissal where the ball bounced back onto the stumps was a setback as India were bowled out for 170.
India are now 1-2 down in the series. Stokes was the ‘Player of the Match’ for his 44 and 33 and 5 wickets in the match including 3 in the 2nd innings along with Jofra Archer who also took 3 wickets.
