Shubman Gill now holds the record for the highest Test score by an Indian captain at Edgbaston, Birmingham, surpassing Virat Kohli’s score from seven years ago. In 2018, Kohli scored 149 during a 31-run loss to England, beating Sachin Tendulkar’s 122 from 1996. Gill’s recent score has set a new standard for Indian captains at this location.
On Day 1, Gill became the fifth Indian batter to score a Test century at Edgbaston, putting him in the same group as Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Sachin Tendulkar, and Ravindra Jadeja. He is also the second Indian captain, after Mohammad Azharuddin, to score over 150 in a Test match in England.
Gill has been in great form this series, scoring centuries in consecutive Tests. He started the series with a score of 147 in the first innings at Headingley in Leeds, although India lost that match by 31 runs. Gill recently became the Test captain after Rohit Sharma retired from the format.
