Anil Kumble, a former India captain and coach, believes that GT captain Shubman Gill should see the 2024 IPL season as a learning experience, as his first captaincy campaign ended on Thursday, May 16.
Following Hardik Pandya’s trade to MI, Gill was named captain, but the Indian player struggled under the new leadership. For the first time in their existence, GT would miss the playoffs and would finish the season with just five victories.
With one game remaining for PBKS and MI, GT might end at the bottom of the table after the match against SRH washed out. GT would be in the eighth place. Speaking on JioCinema, Kumble acknowledged that leading a team to victory in its debut season is never simple, but he also commended Gill for his aggressive field placement strategy. The former India coach predicted that Gill’s experience as captain will improve.
“Leading a team for the first time at the start of an IPL season is never easy. The first time around, you won’t be successful. Since Hardik Pandya was named captain of GT in his rookie season, I am aware of his achievements for the team. However, I like Shubman Gill’s aggressive style in the IPL.”
“He set fields to take wickets while he was captain. Yes, I am aware that he has Noor Ahmed and Rashid Khan, but those fielders still need to be in catching positions. This season, it didn’t work out for them. They were ineligible. All those experiences, nevertheless, must have been a learning curve for him; he will only continue to improve and mature. You get better the more you practice. The more experience you get, the more adept you will be at handling certain circumstances, according to Kumble.
