Though Shreyas Iyer has shown himself to be the most dependable No 4 hitter on the team, he was most certainly not one of the first names on the team sheet when India’s Champions Trophy squad was put together. Since that mission, the batsman who was going to be left out of the first ODI versus England before the start of the Champions Trophy has been shown to have exceptional qualifications in the 50-over format by some outstanding performances. Following a match-winning 79 against New Zealand on Sunday, Iyer confessed that the last year and a half had brought him much personal development which he is now taking full advantage of.
Even a great case in the Indian team, Iyer’s performance in the ODI World Cup 2023 notwithstanding, was peculiar. Reports somehow indicated he wasn’t a specific choice in the Champions Trophy playing XI. Still, the batter battled back and earned the middle-order place his own.
Iyer accepted after the final of the game against the Kiwi that it is his own responsibility to stand for himself rather than relying on someone. For the batter, it’s always &’you vs you;, as no one else is going to rescue him.
“As an individual, I have surely learned much about how to accept the accountability of myself rather than relying on another since I came to see with time that it is just you versus you. No one will be available in your trying times, but there are only a few people who would be there and you know them very personally. So, yeah, in every circumstance I get into I have been just supporting myself and demonstrating that kind of confidence. Iyer said to the broadcaster after Sunday’s game,” I always enjoy supporting my natural inclinations.
I keep repeating that over and over, so I believe that is what has aided me in the last 1.5 years. And as well my method. Our conversation about it seemed rather sharp. But other than that, just to stay in the present as much as possible and not to dwell in those thoughts which has happened in the past…,” he added.
Regarding his middle collaboration with Axar Patel, Iyer also mentioned it helped the Indian squad steadying the ship once the top three batters had gone early.
“Surely, clearly, the ball started initially towards the bat slowly. And it was important and vital for the team to start a partnership from there on; Axar I believe it provided a superb knock to get those vital 40 runs for the team, and we nearly got a partnership of 100, which was critical at that time. Yeah, that was the attitude precisely to keep the scoreboard running. Said the batter: “And that we get boundaries here and there which can possibly get the momentum towards us.
