Prithvi Shaw has witnessed a roller-coaster ride of a career in the last few years, having not only fallen out of favour in the senior team from India but also dropped on the home front where he used to represent Mumbai. Shaw, 25, has been stripped of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy rosters, also facing criticism from Mumbai’s T20 captain Shreyas Iyer for his work ethic. Iyer, who will captain Punjab Kings in IPL 2025, has spoken in support of him but has warned him about his work ethics.
In an interview with the Indian Express, Iyer offered some simple advice to Shaw.
“Prithvi Shaw also started on a great note. He has the great benefit of timing the ball and scoring runs quickly. And all of us in the team feel that he is blessed with that phenomenal talent. So, he just has to focus on his work ethic and everything else will follow,” said Iyer.
“He is God-gifted,” added Iyer, showing the respect that Shaw still commands in Indian cricket.
Shaw’s problems stemmed from indiscipline, as reported by team-mates and coaches. This indiscipline saw him being dropped from Mumbai’s Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 squad, even though he was a member of the side that had won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
The 25-year-old could not find an IPL team in the mega auction apparently because of his lower base price of Rs 75 lakh.
“Tell me God, what more do I have to see…if 65 innings, 3399 runs at an average of 55.7 with a strike rate of 126, I’m not good enough…but I will keep my faith in you and hopefully people believe in me still,” wrote Shaw on Instagram after he was dropped.
On the other hand Shreyas Iyer was appointed as the new skipper of the Punjab kings and is set to represent team India in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy.
