Shreyas Iyer achieves this elusive feat for Punjab kings

Shreyas Iyer is on a roll as captain and a batsman, leading the Punjab Kings to their second win in a row in the 2025 IPL season. They beat the Lucknow Super Giants comfortably by eight wickets on April 1 in Lucknow. Arshdeep Singh and the team really nailed it on a tricky pitch, keeping LSG to 171 runs. Then, Prabhsimran Singh, Nehal Wadhera, and Iyer took charge with the bat, finishing the chase in just 16.2 overs.

This win pushed the Punjab Kings up to second place in the points table with four points, and Iyer set a personal record as captain. This marks his eighth straight win in the IPL, which includes six wins last year with Kolkata Knight Riders and two so far this season. He matched Shane Warne’s record and broke MS Dhoni’s streak. Dhoni had six consecutive wins as a captain a couple of times and his best was seven wins in 2013. Interestingly, even with three streaks (2013, 2014, 2019), CSK didn’t win the title despite their five championships under Dhoni. Gautam Gambhir holds the top record with ten wins in a row while leading KKR back in 2014-15 when they also won the title.

Here’s how the records stack up for most consecutive wins as captain in the IPL:

  • 10 – Gautam Gambhir (Kolkata Knight Riders) – 2014-15
  • 8 – Shane Warne (Rajasthan Royals) – 2008
  • 8 – Shreyas Iyer (Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings) – 2024-25
  • 7 – MS Dhoni (Chennai Super Kings) – 2013
  • 6 – Gautam Gambhir (Kolkata Knight Riders) – 2012
  • 6 – MS Dhoni (Chennai Super Kings) – 2014
  • 6 – Kane Williamson (Sunrisers Hyderabad) – 2018
  • 6 – MS Dhoni (Chennai Super Kings) – 2019
  • 6 – Faf du Plessis (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) – 2024

Iyer had a rainout during his time with KKR when their match against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati was called off last year. He hasn’t lost a match since April 26, 2024, when Punjab Kings chased down a whopping 262 runs against KKR. The Kings look strong with two wins already, and they can take down any team on a good day. Iyer will be eager to break the all-time record next!
