During the IPL 2023 season, Shivam Dube had the privilege of playing under the captaincy of MS Dhoni for the Chennai Super Kings. This experience was a turning point in his career, as Dhoni’s guidance helped him evolve as a cricketer. Dube attributes his newfound game awareness, the art of finishing matches, and handling different situations to the lessons he learned from the cricketing legend.
Under Dhoni’s leadership, Dube’s performance in the IPL 2023 season was sensational. He emerged as the team’s third-highest run-scorer, amassing 418 runs in 16 matches at an impressive average of 38.00 and a striking rate exceeding 158.
Dube’s exceptional form continued in the Deodhar Trophy, where he played a crucial role in helping West Zone successfully chase down 260 runs against North Zone. On a challenging pitch and with West Zone struggling at 122 for 4, Dube exhibited determination and resilience, forging a match-winning partnership of 138 runs for the 5th wicket. His remarkable 73-ball 88 secured a vital victory and demonstrated his ability to handle pressure and anchor innings.
Dube said, “I cannot express all the things… I have upgraded my game. I got to know how to finish the game, how to be in the situation, how to tackle the bowlers, that all things are more important and many things are there but cannot express all the things. But, I definitely got some big tips.”

With his selection for the Asian Games men’s cricket squad, Dube has set clear goals for himself. He aims to be his team’s match-winner and finish games with both bat and ball. “He told me to play till the end and try to finish the game. You can win many matches from your batting, so keep believing in yourself’. For me, the goal is to finish the game with bat and ball. What kind of job I get for my team, what situation I get. I probably plan in that way. So that is more important and working physically and mentally both in that way,” he stated confidently.
