Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir is expected to attend an interview in Mumbai for the position of head coach of the men’s cricket team. The interview will be with BCCI secretary Jay Shah and other officials, according to sources. They mentioned that Gambhir is likely to travel to Mumbai around noon for the interview at the BCCI headquarters. It seems almost certain that he will be appointed as the next head coach since the BCCI has agreed to his terms. The identity of the new head coach will be announced soon. The meeting was planned for between 2 and 4 pm.
Gambhir had made some requests to the BCCI for the head coach role, including having full control over the team and having separate teams for different types of cricket (white-ball and red-ball). IANS understands that the BCCI has agreed to these conditions and is eager to give him the job.
The BCCI has officially asked for people to apply for the job of India’s head coach, with the last day to apply being May 27.
According to the job details, the new head coach for the Indian men’s team will be in charge for all types of cricket games from July 2024 to December 2027.
Dravid’s first contract as India’s head coach started after the 2021 T20 World Cup in November and ended with the 2023 ODI World Cup at home. It was then extended until this year’s T20I event.
At a recent event, Gambhir said, “Being a coach for the national team is the greatest honor.”
The 42-year-old expressed, “I’d really like to coach the Indian team. It’s the highest honor to coach your country’s team. You stand for 1.4 billion Indians and also those living abroad.”
Gambhir played for India’s winning teams in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup.
