The keeper-battler for Team India, Sanju Samson, talked about the emotional road that led to his inclusion in the country’s 15-man roster for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which begins in the USA and the West Indies on June 1. In an effort to earn a berth in the T20 squad, Samson disclosed that he had not used his phone for the last two to three months.
Sanju Samson finished as the fifth-highest run scorer in the IPL 2024 after leading the Royals and scoring 531 runs in 15 innings at an average of 48.27 and a strike rate of 153.47.
After making his debut for India in 2015, Samson’s international career has been erratic. On the other hand, Samson’s outstanding performance in the just finished Indian Premier League won him a spot as a keeper-batter in the Indian team for the 2024 T20 World Cup..
“That was a really emotional World Cup selection. In all honesty, I didn’t really anticipate much from it. I was very aware of my slim chances of getting picked. I was aware that in order to make it there in this IPL, I would need to do something truly unique. I had to put my phone away after coming to that decision. My phone and I seem to be completely disconnected. For the past two to three months, my phone has been off. My game needs to be my only priority. I need to fully commit to giving myself every opportunity to play well and win games for my team in order to improve my chances of being selected for the Indian World Cup squad.”
In a video released by Star Sports, Indian wicketkeeper Sanju Samson continued, “Getting selected to the world’s best T20 team and that also for a World Cup actually deserves something special.”
“It is one thing to be chosen for the World Cup, but it is quite another to actually play on the main stage. However, Sanju Samson is sure that he can be a valuable asset to the team in the forthcoming ICC event after overcoming the selection hurdle. Refocused and determined, Samson thinks his training and commitment would enable him to make a major contribution to India’s triumph on the international scene. I was aware of my potential. All it takes is confidence in oneself, faith that things can be different, and the conviction that, if I live up to my own abilities and potential, I can also be of great help to my nation on the grandest stage of the globe.”
“I genuinely believe I can make a significant contribution to my country and I think I am ready for it,” Samson continued.
