Former Indian cricket player Robin Uthappa talked about Sanju Samson being left out of India’s ODI team for the series against Sri Lanka. Uthappa mentioned that this isn’t the first time Samson has faced this situation, and it likely won’t be the last. He believes one of the main reasons might be the new leadership under Gautam Gambhir, who is now the head coach of Team India. Although Samson is part of India’s T20I team, he wasn’t selected for the 50-over format. He had actually scored his first ODI century in India’s last 50-over game against South Africa in December. Uthappa thinks the new leadership team should be given some time to adjust.
“Sanju has experienced this before, and I doubt it will be his last time as a player. His performance in one-day matches has been really impressive. With possible changes in the team’s leadership, things need to calm down a bit. We, the fans and supporters of the Indian cricket team, should also allow some time for this to happen,” Uthappa mentioned during an online discussion hosted by the Sony Sports Network.
Uthappa also mentioned that Samson still has a chance to be in the ODI team, but he needs to wait for the right moment.
“I believe Sanju is still in the running, just like any other player. It’s just a matter of waiting for his turn. When he gets his chance, he needs to take it and show strong performances to stay in the competition.”
Congress MP Shahi Tharoor once again showed support for Samson, along with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Abhishek Sharma, after they were left out of the ODI and T20I teams. BCCI’s chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, also said in a press conference that it’s hard to include everyone in a 15-player squad.
